Turnbuckles and Rigging Screws, also known as Straining Screws are a common rigging component used to connect rigging and to apply tension to cables and wire ropes. They consist of two threaded shanks that terminate in various end fittings such as eyes, bolt shackles, forks and swages. Available with open or closed barrels and with various end fittings such as jaws, eyes, hooks, closed eyes, screw eyes or a combination of both. Various materials and finishes are on offer from DAMAR such as hot dip galvanised, self-colour or stainless steel for marine and outdoor applications. Turnbuckles originate from the aircraft industry when used for tensioning structural wires for wings of aircraft. This illustrates the structural integrity of these products.
Turnbuckles are seen to be one of the quickest and most effortless ways of tensioning your cable/wire ropes. The tension can simply be adjusted by turning the main frame to increase the strain or release the strain of the cables. This is ideal in many applications as you won't be having to twist the eyebolts or cables. This painless operation cuts out the trivial process of removing the cables and re-straining the load to gain the tension you require.
The main differences between a Turnbuckle and a Rigging Screw are that a Turnbuckle features an open body, meets US standards and are measured imperially in inches, whilst Rigging Screws feature a closed body and are measured metrically in millimetres.
